Who We Are

Space Science for Schools:

SS4S is the collective by-product of a group of dedicated amateur astronomers in the Lake Tahoe, Reno and Carson City area who regularly got together as members of local astronomical societies at star parties.  We were encouraged by the attendees of these public events to formalize our experience in ways that offered the public, schools, and the communities resources in discovering the science of astronomy.

History:

Under the leadership of Paul H. Guttman, M.D., SS4S was organized as an educational non-profit 501 (C) (3) corporation in June of 2003 for the expressed purpose to create community and statewide resources as a Astronomical Society of the Pacific chapter of Project ASTRO and Family ASTRO.   Sierra Nevada College is the sponsoring partner institution hosting our chapter and serves as the primary certifying institution for accreditation of teachers engaged in Project ASTRO training.  The organization is staffed entirely by volunteer astronomers and will eventually hire a full time astronomer-educator to run the teaching programs.
